Michael Phelps wears Speedo Swimsuit

On September 9, 2009 – SPEEDO® announced the extension of its long-time partnership with swimming superstar Michael Phelps through 2013. Following his historic 8 Olympic Gold Medal haul in Beijing, Phelps’ career-spanning commitment to the Speedo brand and a shared passion to help grow the sport of swimming globally now continues through the 2012 London Olympic Games and beyond.

The sponsorship includes a $1 million bonus if Phelps earns a record seven Olympic gold medals at the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, Greece, or the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. The new contract also extends Speedo’s contribution to Phelps’ college education.

“The $1 million bonus is unique,” said Stu Isaac, senior VP-team sales and marketing for Nottingham, England-based Speedo in a statement. “It will certainly help to keep him motivated and cause media attention.”

According to the contract, Phelps will make personal appearances both with Speedo customers (such as sporting good chains and department stores) and at corporate events. He will make appearances within the swimming community at clinics and will compete in and promote the World Swimming Championships 2004 in Indianapolis.

Cross-promotional opportunities will be available with Speedo and his other sponsors, including Visa and USA Swimming.

“The deal with Speedo is uniquely well-suited [to Phelps],” said Peter Carlisle, Octagon representative for Phelps. “Certain campaigns can maximize cross-promotional benefits through products and services that are promoted together.”

Phelps is the youngest male swimmer to break a world record and the youngest U.S. male swimmer to turn professional. His first agreement with Speedo was made two years ago when he was 16.

Phelps is one of the greatest Olympic swimmers of all time and he recently modeled Speedo’s new LZR Racer swimsuit and I wanted to talk a little about the technology behind it. The following is a list of the features of the suit:

LZR racer swimsuit features:

* The suit is constructed from LZR pulse fabric, an ultra lightweight water repellent fabric which also reduces muscle oscillation and skin vibration through powerful compression. It is also fast drying which results in low skin friction drag in the water.

* Specially constructed thin and low drag panels are placed at strategic points all over the suit for streamlined and optimized drag reduction.

* A core stabilizer holds the midsection of the swimmer in a corset like grip to help maintain better body position.

* Ultrasound bonded seams result in a smooth and flexible surface on the bodysuit.

* A low profile zipper further adds to the streamlining of the suit.

Now Michael Phelps didn’t actually wear the suit when he set the Olympic record for most consecutive gold medals, but there are several other swimmers that wear this suit. Training in the suit can also help you learn how to control your body and perfect your form as well.

Team Speedo swimmers include Olympic Gold Medalists Natalie Coughlin (USA), Ryan Lochte (USA), Katie Hoff (USA), Libby Trickett (AUS), Eamon Sullivan (AUS), Park Tae Hwan (KOR) and Rebecca Adlington (GBR).
